The Alu elements erstwhile considered as junk have gained prominence in the recent times with evidence of their involvement in large number of biological functions as well as diseases. They are unique to primate genomes and some of these elements are also specific to human which has found usefulness in population diversity and evolutionary studies. These elements harbor important regulatory sites for transcription factor binding and hormone responsive elements and their presence in promoters of human genes also contribute to gene regulation. Besides they are also involved in genome wide shuffling through recombination, contribute to alternate splicing and also provide integration sites for viruses.
